Sam drove away as slowly as possible as not to call attention to their escape. The only sounds in the car were Connie moaning quietly and the child crying between her sobbing parents.

“What in the hell made you think of gasoline?” John asked, holding onto Connie.

“I guess I got a good look at that thing’s mug before you did while I was in the back yard as it entered the house. It didn’t look like bullets would slow it down much. You know I do go to movies too you know,” he said as he turned the corner and then sped up, passing even more police and fire vehicles as he did.

“What do you mean?” John said as he adjusted Connie’s head, trying not to touch her arm.

“I think we’re dealing with somewhat of a legend here, John.”

“Goddamn it Sam, spill it okay, I’m not following.”

“He means he knows for sure it’s a vampire,” Connie hissed through the pain. “Mr. Dalhart guessed fire was the only thing that would stop it short of a stake through the heart.”

John didn’t say anything, he just stared at his partner.

“That’s why it took me so long to show up. I had to wade out through that damn riot and siphon a coffee can full of gas from the damn car. My being slow to catch on to what we were really dealing with almost cost Connie and that girl’s parents their lives.”

“But you saved us,” Connie said, trying to sit up, but the pain in her shoulder kept her down.

“In case you didn’t know it, that shoulder’s going to have to be popped back in,” Sam said quickly, taking his eyes off the wet road for a moment.

“Don’t call me that again,” Connie hissed and put her face deeper into John’s arm.

“What?” Sam asked.

“You called her a dame, I don’t think she likes that,” John said with a small grin.

Sam didn’t say anything, he just looked at Connie’s form and then smiled as the car sped away toward the city below.
